Billfish, BioBlitzes, and Regional Softball: A Packed Mid-May Week
Orange Beach Billfish Classic, Gulf State Park's first Venture Out event, school awards, and regional sports made mid-May one of the spring's busiest local weeks.

The week of May 11 was one of those coastal weeks where everything seemed to happen at once: offshore fishing at The Wharf, outdoor programming across Gulf State Park, school celebrations, and postseason sports.
It was a good reminder that "local events" here are not just beach concerts. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach run on a mix of boating, schools, tournaments, nature programming, and family calendars all stacked together.
Orange Beach Billfish Classic at The Wharf
The 30th Annual Orange Beach Billfish Classic ran May 12-16 at The Wharf in Orange Beach, with tournament activity extending through the weekend. The event is a major marker on the Gulf fishing calendar and the start of serious big-game tournament season here.
Even if you are not fishing, weigh-in nights are worth experiencing. The Wharf Marina takes on a completely different feel when tournament boats come in, crowds line up near the scales, and everyone waits to see what the teams bring back from offshore.
Venture Out Brought the Park Into Focus
Gulf State Park launched its first Venture Out festival May 15-17, with outdoor-focused activities across the Learning Campus, Lake Shelby, the Nature Center, the Gulf Coast Eco-Center, and the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail.
The schedule included guided bike rides, eco-shuttle tours, beach and nature walks, ropes-course activities, and a BioBlitz that encouraged visitors to help document plant and animal species around the park. For families relocating here, it was a perfect example of why Gulf State Park is more than a place to camp or ride bikes. It is a year-round outdoor classroom.
Local School and Sports Notes
- Orange Beach City Schools had Kindergarten and 6th grade graduation on May 13.
- The AHSAA Regional Softball Championship brought teams and families to the Gulf Shores Five Plex during the week.
- Orange Beach school calendars also listed golf, softball, baseball, and end-of-year recognition events throughout the week.
What We Noticed
Mid-May is when the area starts feeling like summer without being fully in the summer crush. Restaurants are busy but manageable, families are finishing school, and tournament visitors are already discovering the area beyond the beach. If you are scouting neighborhoods, it is one of the better weeks to watch how different parts of town handle event traffic.
Thinking about boating life?
Orange Beach neighborhoods can feel very different depending on marina access, bridge clearances, and how often you want to run through Perdido Pass.
