Mid-April on the Alabama Gulf Coast had a little bit of everything: evening lights, beach volleyball, tennis, track, spring wildlife, and the kind of weather that makes locals remember why they live here.
This is one of the best stretches of the year for people who like the outdoors but do not want full summer heat. The Gulf is warming up, the Backcountry Trail is active, and the event calendar starts mixing sports with art, culture, and family nights.
Gulf Coast Chinese Lantern Festival
The Gulf Coast Chinese Lantern Festival opened April 16 at Bellingrath Gardens and Home and continued on select nights into June. The festival brought large illuminated sculptures, interactive displays, and a strong evening option for families willing to make the drive toward Theodore.
For beach visitors, it is a reminder that a Gulf Shores or Orange Beach trip can easily stretch beyond the island. A lot of families plan one or two off-beach evenings, especially when they are staying for a week.
Beach Volleyball and Spring Sports
Gulf Place hosted the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Small College Championship April 15-19, giving the public beach another stretch of high-level competition before the NCAA championship arrived later in the month.
The sports calendar also included Alabama Tennis Invitational play around Gulf Shores, The Peninsula, and The Beach Club, plus track events at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. Spring sports bring a quieter but steady kind of tourism: families, coaches, repeat visitors, and teams who learn the area one tournament weekend at a time.
Local Reminders
- Public beach alcohol restrictions were still active in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach through April 28.
- Trail mornings were excellent, especially around Gulf State Park before afternoon warmth.
- Restaurants with outdoor seating started feeling more like summer without the full June wait times.
Why This Week Stood Out
This was not a single headline weekend. It was more of a coastal sampler: lights, sports, trails, beach rules, and school calendars all moving toward the summer finish line. For relocation buyers, weeks like this show the everyday richness of the area better than one giant festival can.
